Kaomoji were invented in 1980s to portray facial expression with text characters avalible on japanese keyboards. Kaomoji or 'face characters' first started popping up on places like ASCII NET, but Wakabayashi Yasushi is acreddited to inventing the very first kaomoji -> "(^_^)" While on the modern internet we don't have a need for these, many people world wide still use them as a way to communicate expressions through text.
